What is a Prosthodontist?
A Prosthodontist is a dental specialist who has completed advanced postgraduate studies, and who is an expert in restoring, replacing, and shaping teeth, utilizing dental implants and other prosthetic materials, literally bringing smiles and faces to millions of patients worldwide.
To receive certification from the HPSCA (Health Professionals Council of South Africa), prosthodontic candidates must complete five years of dental school, followed by an additional three to four years of training in a post-graduate education program of Prosthodontics, accredited by the HPCSA (Health Professionals Council of South Africa).
It has been realized that on a global scale people are living longer and as a result, comprehensive treatment is no longer limited to a specific age group. Due to this global phenomenon Prosthodontists are key players in providing healthy, functional and attractive improvements to patients of any age.

What is Prosthodontics?
Prosthodontics is one of the six dental specialities recognized by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), each requiring board certification or eligibility to practice. The other specialities include orthodontics, maxillofacial and oral surgery, oral medicine and periodontics, community dentistry and oral pathology.
Prosthodontics is a field of Dentistry that is dedicated to the task of “tooth and facial structure replacement” including comprehensive oral reconstructions in more complex cases, such as severe breakdown of teeth and genetic disorders related to facial structures, amongst others.

Providing the highest quality of specialist dental treatment and care to patients using cutting edge technology and equipment. To ensure that I keep abreast of current literature and research in this specialized field in order develop my knowledge and improve my clinical efficiency and skill. This brings innovation and confidence that will always allow me to better treat my patients. In today’s economic environment, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, any dental clinician has to become an exceptional business executive as well. In addition, mastering the ability to work independently as well as part of a team is essential for the long-term success and expansion of a modern Dental clinic.

Clinical Experience (2010 to current)
- I am the sole director of my clinic for the past 10 years and have mastered almost all aspects of modern aesthetic
dentistry. My offices are in an extremely upmarket area of South Africa and I have been one the preferred Specialist’s
to many Presidents and dignitaries within Africa. I have treated patients from many parts of the world, and still
maintain this communication. - My treatments include full mouth reconstructions, Implant surgery and restorations (I have experience with at least 13
various implants systems e.g. Straumann, Megagen, Southern, Ankylos, NobelBiocare, MIS, 3I), veneers, TMJ
management, Botox therapy, Invisalign and clear liners, Endodontics etc. - My clinic serves as a referral Centre for many general practitioners and I have also been, in a position to carry out
routine dental work as well as complex cases. We have a multidisciplinary approach to many complex cases
including congenital syndromes etc. - My treatment plans include incorporating three-dimensional (3D) imaging implant planning software (coDiagnostiX)
together with 3D printing facility for fabrication of fully guided surgical stents. - I use state of the art fully digital dentistry (3Shape TRIOS intra-oral scanner) and three shape design software. This
has enabled us to go completely digital with impressions and study models, etc. - My practice also makes use of in-house fabrication of tooth supported crowns, tooth supported fixed partial dentures
(“FPDs”) [Dental Wings and CARES Visual design software] as well as in-house fabrication of implant supported
crowns, implant supported FPDs [Dental Wingsand CARES Visual design software] - For mild and moderate orthodontic malocclusion of teeth, the design and fabrication of Clear Correct Aligners
- My practice serves as a complete one-stop station for patients with in-house dental laboratory – Amann Girrbach AG
Milling Unit, Ivoclar Vivadent furnace. This can be beneficial to provide a very short turnaround time for final
prostheses.

The starting point of dental implant therapy is the Prosthodontist.
Implants are a tool commonly used to replace missing or lost teeth, and to improve function in denture wearing patients. The Prosthodontist co-ordinates the entire treatment, working closely with other registered dental specialist groups (Maxillofacial Surgeons, Periodontists, etc) to ensure that a patient’s main problems are treated to the highest professional standard.
Dental Implants are metal alloy screws that “biologically merge” with the bone and which act as support for “prosthetic teeth or appliances”
Dental implants are used when a tooth or teeth have been lost. An implant can be used to replace a single tooth, replace several teeth, replace all teeth while looking and functioning like natural teeth
The starting point for implant treatment would be the Prosthodontist. Generally, most people who are missing teeth are favourable candidates to receive dental implants, but treatment plans & risk factors will vary from patient to patient. A detailed consultation will reveal type of treatment including the number of implants, cost and risk factors involved.
Most success rates are based on clinical studies that are documented in various parts of the world. There are very high success rates, with ongoing research reporting 95% survival for individual implants and higher rates for implant-supported bridges.
